Alexis Dabee Saltmarsh, Lecturer of Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering at Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone has been recognised as the Gold Winner for Further Education Lecturer of the Year in the 2024 Pearson National Teaching Awards, considered the ‘Oscars’ of the teaching profession. The exclusive reveal was featured on last night’s BBC’s The One Show, ahead of a glittering awards ceremony this weekend.
During the programme, Alexis received a Zoom call from British space scientist, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, who revealed news of the incredible win. Alexis was then surprised by a group of former students presenting her with the Gold Award.
Selected from thousands of nominees, the Gwent-based lecturer has been recognised for her exceptional contribution to both students and the wider community. Alexis was praised for her approach to nurturing future talent and equipping students with skills in advanced technologies, additive manufacturing, and industry 4.0, while simultaneously advocating for equality and diversity in STEM. Despite managing a long-term disability, her commitment to student success is unwavering, reflected in her pursuit of a Master’s Degree and involvement with local schools.
