AN OMAGH teacher has scooped a silver teaching award for ‘Teacher of the Year’ in a prestigious annual competition.
Selected from thousands of nominations, Mark Deehan from Sacred Heart College is one of just 56 teachers to be acknowledged in the 2017 Pearson Teaching Awards.
For being a true inspiration in the classroom, the popular technology teacher was crowned winner in the category ‘Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School’.His fantastic achievement was celebrated at a large assembly at the Sacred Heart College on Friday as part of Thank a Teacher Day.
Due to this success, Mr Deehan will soon be joining fellow winners at the UK final of the Pearson Teaching Awards, a glittering ceremony held in central London on October 22.
This ceremony, titled ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes’, will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC as a showcase of excellence in education.
There, they will find out which of them has won one of just 11 ‘Gold Plato Awards’ – dubbed the UK’s ‘Oscars for Teachers’.
Previous award presenters have included former prime ministers David Cameron and Tony Blair, acting legends Alison Steadman, Sheila Hancock and Timothy West and sports and TV personalities including Helen Glover, Brendan Cole and Nadiya Hussain.
Rod Bristow, president of Pearson UK, said that it was an honour to support the Teaching Awards each year.
“Great teaching can have a huge impact on a child’s education so it’s vital for us to recognise and celebrate inspirational teachers, for their commitment to teaching and learning and for improving the life chances of the next generation,” he said.
“All who received a silver trophy should feel extremely proud of their achievement, and I Iook forward to meeting them at the final ceremony later this year.”
The Pearson Teaching Awards are a celebration of exceptional teachers, created to recognise the life-changing impact a teacher can have on the lives of young people.
