Mark Thomas, of Brymore Academy in Somerset, has been recognised as the Gold Winner for Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School in the 2024 Pearson National Teaching Awards, considered the ‘Oscars’ of the teaching profession. The exclusive reveal was featured on last night’s BBC’s The One Show, ahead of a glittering awards ceremony this weekend.
Mark, who recently retired, dedicated over 14 years to transforming Brymore Academy. The state-funded boarding and day school for boys, set on a 100-acre farm, is now the most oversubscribed school in Somerset, having advanced from the bottom 10% to the top 10% for progress nationally.
With 56% of SEND students, the school’s varied curriculum covers husbandry, milking and engineering, with access to the farm, gardens, engineering workshops and blacksmithing forge.
Mark was surprised with news of his award win when he received a video message from Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel-Horwood live in The One Show studio. After being named Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary school, congratulatory messages from Mark’s peers and former pupils were also aired.
Selected from thousands of nominees, the Bridgewater-based educator has been recognised for his exceptional contribution to both students and the wider community.
