Teaching Assistants make the difference.

Classroom support staff enrich the lives of children every day. Often referred to as the backbone of the classroom, and an asset to the teachers they support, they also have a positive impact on the children they support, helping them to overcome academic, social or emotional barriers to learning.

We’d love to read about what makes your colleague exceptional and why you want to enter them for this award.

Who can enter?

This category is open to all classroom assistants including teaching assistants, learning mentors, learning support assistants and those involved directly in supporting teaching and learning. We welcome entries from state and independent schools and FE colleges.

Points to cover:

The following prompts might help to focus your thinking as you prepare your entry:

  • Learning environment – The ways in which your colleague works with others to help create a learning environment where pupils feel secure and can flourish. How they work with teachers to support pupil’s learning and how they help engage with parents to encourage them to help their children on their learning journey.
  • Aiming high – Examples of support given to pupils when the challenge is great, or the outcome uncertain to enable pupils to achieve their academic and other development goals, and to overcome difficulties they face.
  • Continuous development – The teaching assistant’s continuing commitment to their own professional learning and personal development. Give us some examples of how your colleague has developed their own skills and knowledge since joining the school and how they share their expertise with others.
  • Making a difference – Their contribution to team teaching, the whole staff team, life at school and in the wider school community. How do others view their contributions?
