With the goal to get the village reading, ‘Reading for Pleasure’ is an award-winning initiative by Netherburn Primary School. Without a library close by, the local community was missing out on reading for enjoyment and Netherburn Primary wanted to bridge that accessibility gap. It updated the school library and opened it as a community lending library, sourcing books and fundraising.
Pupils built their skills and confidence by applying to become librarians, with all now thriving in their roles. After a successful marketing campaign, the library opened with a great turnout and has become an integral part of the community. An inclusive initiative offering a welcoming place to read and relax, opening the library means that the whole community can engage with literature for free.
