John became Headteacher here in 2014. In this, his first headship, he is described by colleagues as outstanding. His development of a strong new vision has led to Ysgol Treffynnon becoming a school of choice since its removal from special measures in December 2019. Despite taking on huge challenges including poor attendance, a falling school roll, staff problems, poor results, a high budget deficit, transitioning to a new school building and operating with a new Interim Governing Body (IEB) replacing the school’s governing body, John’s optimism and conviction of purpose never wavered.
Together with the support of the restructured senior leadership team, staff, parents, and students, he turned the school around. He brought in inspirational speakers and former students to share their education/work/life experiences and inspire a love of learning. He advocates on students’ behalf and is seen by colleagues as a great role model in his work ethic, strong value system, accountability and professionalism.
