John Burgess, Northfield School & Sports College

John Burgess is an exceptional teacher of Science who is passionate about teaching and learning. He has been teaching for over eleven years and in that time he has supported and inspired many hundreds of children to aim high and achieve their potential. The students admiration for him knows no bounds as he helps them get to grips with Science and in doing well, build their confidence and self-esteem. He has worked tirelessly to learn the skills that have made him such an exceptional teacher. In October 2004, John suffered a Spinal Cord Injury, breaking his neck whilst playing rugby. As a consequence of the accident John is partially paralysed in all four limbs and wholly dependent on a wheelchair for mobility. Most people, experiencing such a catastrophic injury would give up teaching. Not John. In a remarkably short period of time, John was back in the classroom teaching doing what he loves.

As a Curriculum Leader, John is said to be “without equal”. He is determined to ensure that every student achieves their full academic potential and that every teacher is supported to improve and to attain outstanding teacher status. He is a very worthy winner of this prestigious Award.
