Schools are paying up to £500 a day for private consultants to fix an “epidemic” of sleeplessness among pupils since the pandemic.
Kerry Davies, a “sleep fixer”, is among experts recruited to coach families whose children have become “nocturnal”. During lockdown, some youngsters got into the habit of going to bed in the early hours and sleeping into the morning, with many failing to wake in time for school.
Department for Education figures show that about 1.6 million children in England missed a day of school once a fortnight last year, including thousands who arrived so late that they were marked absent.
Rob Bell, head teacher at the Consilium Evolve school for 11 to 16-year-olds in Sunderland, has hired Davies, who charges £500 a day, to hold sleep lessons in school for families.
Davies, who also works with schools in Bedfordshire and London, also holds one-to-one sessions with pupils and their parents online.
