Mr Fred Shadwell

Teaching Awards 2007 Winner

The Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement, sponsored by the Innovation Unit in North West of England

William Beamont Community School, WARRINGTON

Fred Shadwell is the life and soul of Warrington. Born and brought up in the town, he has dedicated his working life as a sports teacher to the people of the community. Having worked at William Beamont Community School for the past 37 years he is responsible for the physical education of generations and his commitment today is as fresh as it was all those years ago.

He has worked to one principle and one principle only: the child comes first. He will run a club even if only one student turns up for it. Individuals matter and in he has been driven to ensure that no matter their background his students will not be deprived of social skills, good health and positive personal awareness.

He is determined that every child in his school, a sports college, achieves a sports qualification and his PE and Dance GCSE results are outstanding - among the best in the country. Recently his school has been praised for its Year 9 sports leader’s course – a model for peer mentoring across the curriculum.

In partnership with the rugby league club Warrington Wolves, Fred established the Warrington Rugby Scholarship squad in school, enabled Warrington Wolves to train in the school grounds and encouraged players to spend time in school helping students with their reading. Six members of the scholarship squad went on to become professional players and the school team has won the national championship league.

But Fred shows the same commitment to football, dance, hockey, judo, gymnastics, cross-country - you name it. Up to 150 girls are members of sports clubs in school and some students may well represent the UK in the 2012 Games. Fred is currently leading a seven-year campaign to bring a £32 million sports and leisure facility into the community. He is one of Warrington’s greatest ambassadors.

  • Fred - a legend!

I have worked with Fred in several capacities over the years, originally as part of the Warrington Town Athletics when I taught at other schools. Now Iwork with him at William Beamont. He has been and still is one the best role model anyone could possibly hope to work with in teaching. His calm approach in all matters is an example to us all. He is always positive and enthusiastic in all aspects of his job and is a real legend in the whole community. Many parents who come into school ask if he is still here and they all remember him fondly as their teacher who made a real difference to them. This is still the case with the current pupils. William Beamont would not be the school it is without the fantastic efforts of 'our Fred' Good luch Fred noone deserves this recognition more than you.

From something as exotic as setting up volleyball tournaments in Uganda to something as mundane as finding minibus hire in Warrington......Fred is your man! Well done again Fred!

  • Fred Shadwell

Sometimes you know people a long time, and they don't create much of an impression. Others you work with, and over a matter of months you can tell that they have stature. Things like the way they talk to pupils and staff, treating them all with respect and encouraging them to respond in kind. It is a pleasure to be part of the same team as Fred Shadwell. His achievements deserve to be recognised nationally.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr Shadwell when I attended Beamont High School from 1982 to 1987. My son Liam now attends the school and is in year 7. Mr Shadwell has recently been Liams teacher of basketball. He shows great commitment and nothing is too much trouble. The children always come first. Liam thinks he is great. • An Exceptional Exception

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Fred Shadwell for 8 years. During that time he has been far more than a colleague. Fred is a true friend and a natural mentor. Fred’s' unshakable faith in all that is good; is humbling. Fred has the desire and ability to see a silver lining in every cloud. Fred focuses on achievement for all. Sports day at William Beamont, hosted by Fred is a celebration of achievement at all levels. It is a day when everybody is a winner and children at all skills levels are cheered on and encouraged, just for taking part. Fred is level headed and has a strong moral and social conscience. His quiet command of respect never ceases to amaze me. He is; it must be said ‘A Legend in Longford’ with some local families having 3 generations taught by Fred at William Beamont. He is an ambassador for our school our town and our country and he has proudly represented us in different countries all over the world, including Uganda and Australia I think that Fred’s achievements in the past eight years alone; most people would be proud to achieve in a lifetime. There is no doubt at all in my mind that he is the truly deserving winner of this award. Fred’s commitment to the health and well being of the pupils and staff of William Beamont and the parents and friends of the wider community is clear every day. This is demonstrated by the huge variety of activities on going each day and evening as part of the work Fred does as Director of Sport for the Specialist Sports College. I am proud to be a Colleague and friend of Fred Shadwell. I wish him well; as does everybody I know, whose lives have been touched by him. I know that people are not irreplaceable, but how do you begin to replace almost 40 years of hard work and dedication in one community. There are exceptions to every rule… and this exceptional exception is Mr Fred Shadwell. My friend, mentor and colleague.

  • Congratulations

Congratulations to Fred Shadwell on his nomination for “A Lifetime Achievement Award’ I have known Fred since 1979 when I first joined the staff at the then Orford Secondary School. Fred even in the early days was a committed, caring teacher, whose first priority was the welfare and education of the pupils. He has always led from the front and has been an excellent ambassador for the school in outside activities. As the years have progressed and Fred has achieved promotion, his commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and loyalty to the school has never waned; he is still the same totally committed member of staff. Fred’s approach to school life has always been to show respect for his peers and pupils alike and in return he is greatly respected by everyone. Good Luck Fred. Anita Taylor Main Office

  • Thank you Fred

My name is Danielle Foulkes I run the Warrington Starlight’s Dance & Cheerleading Team and we are based at William Beamont Dance Studio. I would like to take this time to tell you all how Fred has helped me develop my school. I started the Starlight Dance Academy 8 years ago we used to train in the West Gym we started with 10 children in the class, I had the pleasure of meeting Fred when we first started out he was so supportive to my academy and really shared my passion to get young children fit through dance & cheerleading. As time went on I set up regular meeting with Fred so I could keep him updated on the children I had attending my classes i.e. their age and which school they attended needless to say this alignment with Fred is going from strength to strength we now have around 120 students and Fred has accommodated us with studio space which is fantastic & we are now going into schools teaching dance/cheerleading as well. Fred is not only a talented teacher but he is caring and is passionate about his job and helping others, He thoroughly deserves to be nominated for the Lifelong Achievement Award and is a asset to the school, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Fred helping and believing in me, along with sharing my passion to get young children fit in the community. I wish you luck and feel privileged to know you. Good Luck !!

  • UNIQUE

I have had a great opportunity to become part of a fantastic project based here at William Beamont, all thanks to Fred. The project enables young people to receive support during transition time and it would not have been possible without Fred and his endless hard work and links with external agencies. Having worked with Fred for 2 1/2 years I have found him most supportive and a great asset to this school. The best way to describe Fred in my view is UNIQUE. On behalf of the Peer Mentors and I, we wish you lots of luck - although you don't need it!!!

It would be hard to find anyone with the dedication and passion Fred shows, not only to his own work, but to others' aswell. Everywhere you go, and mention the school, it is Fred that people remember. If we can see 37 years of teaching through, and be half the teacher and leader he is, we would have done surprisngly well! It gives me tremendous pleasure to support Fred in this special award. I have worked with him for almost 28 years. Although I do not teach I have seen young staff arrive in school and be influenced and inspired greatly by Fred and his wonderful attitude and enthusiasm for his subject, the school and most of all our pupils. All our pupils relate to Fred, they look to him for support and guidance. He has dealt with the most difficult students in a truly positive way and encouraged them to channel their energies in the right direction. Fred is well known throughout the community and Warrington as a whole. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with Fred Shadwell and I wish him all the very best in the outcome of this award. You come across as a laid back person who is firm but fair, the main thing is you believe! Events that people wouldn't dream of doing happen because of you. You have the belief, vision and determination to focus and carry through a vision, co-ordinating with all necessary parties to make it happen! I am particularly grateful for the support you have given me to achieve my vision of taking William Beamont pupils sailing, a passion that we both share, however, yours take place in warmer climates.I had the belief that it could happen and it has with your support. The pupils and I have thoroughly enjoyed our experiences gained and would like to thank you for giving us this opportunity! Surfs up! Thanks Fred

  • Message of support!

Well done on winning the North West "Ted Wragg Award for lifetime achievement" and good luck at the National Finals. Fred taught myself, my wife Barbara, both my sons Stuart and Gareth, my brother Barry his daughters Kate and Rachel and the way he looks he could teach their children as well. He was always the perfect teacher - encouraging all pupils to become involved with sport no matter how good, bad or indifferent you were within a praticular discapline. One in a million - "GOOD LUCK" from us all

  • A True Star!

It's difficult to put into words just what Fred means to us at William Beamont. I've worked here for about 8 years, and I truly don't remember a day when I've seen Fred without a smile, or a time when I've heard him raise his voice to a pupil. The pupils know that they can trust him, know that he will listen to them and know that he will treat them fairly. The staff all respect Fred, not one of us doubts his commitment and his hard work - everything he does, he does from the heart. He really is a true star! It's been an honour to work with you Fred. We've all got everything crossed for you, Fred - good luck!

  • His underlying enthusiasm pervades everything.

It’s now a remarkable 18 years since I left William Beamont and though the memories are fast fading, there are a few characters from my days that will always remain. Fred was one of those. If I remember rightly, my parents knew him from their own school days (he didn’t teach them, they were friends, he’s not that old!) and he had a reputation that preceded him. He actually taught at Montford before the merger with Beamont and, being a Beamont kid in my first year I can remember vividly sitting in a Religious Studies class gazing across the field at a Montford PE lesson, wishing I was out there. Someone was attempting to do the pole vault of all things, and was landing from a great height into a sand pit the other side of the bar. It looked so much fun and I was so jealous, why didn’t Beamont kids get taught to pole vault! The teacher, I could see, was Fred. I was pretty disappointed on the schools’ merger to find that he wasn’t going to be my personal PE teacher but that mattered not. Fred had a capacity to affect all of the kids in each year with his abundant enthusiasm for life, his calm and deliberate temperament and charming personality. As a pupil, it was quite simply impossible not to like him and respect him. I have further memories of trying to beat the school triple jump and high jump records and on both occasions, Fred giving me candid advice on how I might improve my technique, change this here, or that there, or, perhaps just run a little faster and jump a little higher. He had a great sense of humour and was so in tune with kids from years 1 to 5. I can also remember a time when I joined a group of children from the year above me on an outward bounds expedition. On the way up, Fred sensed that I might feel out of my depth, there was a little tension between me and one of the older boys, that I might feel a little threatened. All it took was a quick word in each of our ears from Fred to diffuse the situation and we ended up best of friends. He had that uncanny knack of being able to read a situation and ensure things never got out of hand. Not a lot of people have it, but it’s innate in Fred. I last bumped into Fred a couple of years back, in TK Maxx, whilst we were both shopping for Christmas presents. I was actually loitering around the underpants section wondering what was vogue nowadays and Fred came over and once again gave me some great advice! We had a lovely catch up, I hadn’t seen him in over 6 years and he hadn’t changed a bit. I swear he hadn’t even aged. Teachers like Fred come around once every blue moon. The undying enthusiasm he has for the kids and their wellbeing pervades everything he does and it goes without saying that he’s a credit to the teaching profession and to William Beamont high school. It makes me really proud that somebody I know and was privileged enough to have teach me is up for an award like this and should he win it, it couldn’t possibly go to a nicer guy.

  • Big Thanks for your Peer Mentors!!!

The Transition Peer Mentoring Project has been active for the past 4 years. It serves over 500 pupils each year to help them with their worries about high school. Over the years we have seen more than 100 Peer Mentors develop skills in leadership which has given them greater confidence, responsibility and status within the school. The Year 6 pupils involved have had an easier transition phase and we have seen improved attendance and attainment results from both groups. Fred Shadwell initiated the project and has been heavily involved it its success. With Freds support we have achieved National Accrediation, BT Speaking and Listening Award and several national conferences across London to share good practice. We woudl like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Fred for making this happen!

  • SIMPLY THE BEST!

Hi Fred and well done! You have always been such a conscientious and (handsome) guy!! I have very fond memories of you from when I was in school. You always had a smile for everyone and a great sense of humour. Nothing was ever too much for you. I have fond memories of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and all the time and effort you put into the camping trips etc. After 37 years your approach and enthusiasm is amazing! Good Luck you deserve it all!

  • History in the making...

When you work at school in 2007, it is very rare that a member of staff has shown such loyalty to one establishment and given over thirty years service. Staff move on and lose touch and after a while a great deal of the school's history simply vanishes. Fred Shadwell has always remained loyal to this school and the pupils. As a result he has become part of the history of this school and stands as an example to us all.

  • Fred exceeds all the criteria

Sorry I can’t call in on 17th - one cannot resist such a summons, can one? (Buckingham Palace) The supporting statements for Fred are wonderful and there is little I can add. I could just say that as a former judge of the Teaching Awards and of a former Lifetime Achievement Award winner (Barry Cooke of Hyde Tech. College in 2001). Fred seems to exceed all the criteria. I wish you all, and Fred, very great success.

  • Well Done

Teaching Awards – Lifetime achievement Mr F Shadwell William Beamont Sports College Supporting Statement Between June 2003 and August 2004, I was employed by Warrington LEA as Partnership Development Manager of the Phase 7 SSP in the town. I was based at William Beamont Sports College and it is during this time that I came to know Fred professionally. Warrington, and the Orford area in particular, are very fortunate to have a great servant such as Fred, working tirelessly for the benefit of pupils, residents and the wider community. Terms such as ‘great’ and ‘lifetime achievement’ are increasingly offered far too cheaply to mediocre performance. However, in the case of Mr Shadwell, such terms are fully justified, as his have been achievements accrued over a working lifetime in education, attempting to enrich the lives and raise the aspirations of all young people he has encountered. Fred gave me tremendous professional support during my time in Warrington, at William Beamont, and I know that his experience and visionary approach to the delivery of PE & Sport are valued across the authority, region and national network of specialist sports colleges. His commitment to OSHL is an example that should be shown to all NQT PE teachers, whilst his subject knowledge in areas such as gymnastics and athletics also enables Fred to perform on the job inset for many teachers new to William Beamont. I wish Fred every success with this National nomination, and know that regardless of the decision, he will treat the outcome with the dignity and humility with which he has achieved his many other successes within teaching. His priority remains the well being of the children, and in an age where school bureaucracy often prevent teachers from following this pathway in pursuit of personal gain and professional development, Fred’s approach and enduring passion for his profession should be recognised. Good luck Fred. Liam Horrigan Head of Vocational Education Ashton on Mersey School

  • Well Done

Congratulations "Sir"! I'm really pleased to here about the award (sorry about the delay in posting, but I live in Wigan now and the pidgeon mail up here isn't the fastest!), it's good to know that one of life's good guys is getting recognition for a lifetime of dedication. Sport has always been close to my heart, with Rugby and Athletics the main ones, and yourself and the Teaching staff at school were a major factor in that. It takes a special person who gives up his evenings and weekends to be with the youth of Orford and Longford, and I for one will always be truly grateful. Thanks and good luck!

  • Teaching the Teachers

You taught me 25 years ago and are continuing to be an inspiration. As a PE teacher myself, here at United Nations International school of Hanoi, I wanted to firstly congratulate you on this long overdue award, and secondly acknowledge you, as being a major role model in my teaching because your personal qualities and commitment to your students is second to none and only after leaving, do you really appreciate the extra time that you gave students such as myself (extra training in Athletics). If I can be half the teacher that you are, I will be content with that. Sincerely and respectfully yours Alan Hough
