Mrs Trish Gribble

Teaching Awards 2009 Winner

The TDA Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year

Stoke Damerel Community College, PLYMOUTH

Trish Gribble’s motto in life is that “mountains are there to be climbed” and it is a philosophy she applies just as readily to her students. Many have overcome learning difficulties, or tough home and personal circumstances, to go on to achieve well beyond their expectations because of her input.

Through her work as assistant director of sixth form and coordinator of the Princes Trust, Trish has helped and supported students to achieve their potential. It is down to her that a visually-impaired student became the first from a mainstream school to go to university. She supported another student to leave a violent home and become independent, resulting in the young woman now working as a TA herself. The list of pupils she has helped through life-changing situations is endless.

The student who nominated her said: “She is a wonderful all round member of staff. She can do anything, even though she is a teaching assistant.”

Trish has recently worked with the parents of Muslim students to build trust so that they could attend a residential event. It was the first time the girls were allowed to go away from home unchaperoned by a family member.

As assistant director of sixth form, she has responsibility for the individual education plans of special needs students ensuring that their needs are met and their progress is mapped and reviewed regularly. She also delivers health and social care at key stage 4 and 5 within UQT status. She leads in the sixth form by example and the work that she has undertaken with vulnerable groups in supporting their learning and development are seen by other professionals as an example of good practice.

One student said Trish “always speaks kindly to students and makes us want to be there, working as hard as we can". A colleague said she was “a key member of staff who keeps us all sane when we think we are losing it!”

Trish works closely with Julie Bevan, regional winner of the Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School.

Judges said: “Trish is selfless and tireless in her work.”
