Mrs Morwel Palmer
Teaching Awards 2005 Winner
The Welsh Assembly Government Award for the Promotion of the Welsh Language in a School in Wales
Spittal VC Primary School, HAVERFORDWEST
It is a mark of Morwel’s passion for the language that she is known by pupils, parents and the community simply as ‘our Welsh teacher’.
Her promotion of the Welsh language, culture and history throughout the school where she is Assistant Headteacher is remarkable for the effective, natural and harmonious way it permeates daily teaching. For while the school is located in a principally English speaking part of Wales, (in fact only about two from more than 120 pupils at the school speak Welsh as a first language at home), pupils learn to be so fluent in Welsh that many opt to go on to a Welsh medium school for their secondary education. It is through Morwel’s encouragement that all staff, whatever their level of expertise in Welsh, use the language to help pupils become bilingual.
Welsh cultural life is also highly featured in the school’s activities, not least their outstanding record of success at the Urdd National Eisteddfod. Last year was their best ever with 36 pupils representing the school and county. They participated in seven activities winning five gold medals and one silver medal, all against strong opposition.
Morwel’s approach during her 19 years at the school has neither been to enforce or be adamant, but to be natural and dynamic in stimulating interest in the country’s language and culture. It is an approach that will bear fruit for years to come. She is a fine ambassador not only for the teaching profession, but also for the people of Wales and the history and traditions of which they are so proud.
