Mr Grahame Webb
Teaching Awards 2009 Winner
The Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement in South of England
The Emmanuel CE VA Middle School, VERWOOD
Grahame Webb’s life’s work is never more than a few inches away from him. On his desk he has a block of wood with the word ‘children’ carved deep into it to remind him what it is all for.
The truth is, though, that Grahame doesn’t need reminding. He has a never-ending drive to achieve the best for his own pupils, and those in other schools that he helps and supports. He values hard work and honesty, and leads a school where everyone treats each other with kindness and respect. He is fair and devoted to all children, and this is underpinned by his strong Christian faith.
As a young man, Grahame had ambitions to be a professional footballer, but was hampered by injury. Still a keen runner and golfer, his love of sport continues to drive his fundamental belief in the value of good physical health and healthy eating. Thanks to his efforts, Emmanuel is a specialist Sports College – an unusual feat for a middle school.
Grahame displays unstinting commitment to everything he takes on, especially where there are issues of child protection, children’s rights or family values at stake. He is passionate about education. One colleague said he reminded him of a “human dynamo” such is his energy! He always seeks the best for his school, whether it is an improved curriculum, better resources or through the benefits of working with other schools. Another colleague said: “He often reminded me of ‘Del boy’ with his unflinching belief in education and our school in particular.”
Most schools have School Council’s but Grahame’s school also has a Learning Council, where pupils can talk honestly about what it is really like for them as students. One member said: “He sits to the side, listens and responds to our good ideas.”
Colleagues seek Grahame’s advice and follow his example as a lead professional. He is Chair of the Dorset Group of Headteachers, and his professional relationships are outstanding. He is supportive of young and new teachers, and nurtures their talents.
Judges said: “State schools would have missed out on this remarkable man if it were not for a sports injury that changed his choice of career to that of a teacher. The world of education has been blessed by Grahame’s personal tragedy.”
