Ms Beth Darby

Teaching Awards 2008 Winner

The BT Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School in East Midlands

White's Wood Lane Junior School, GAINSBOROUGH

Beth Darby’s pupils believe she is “top banana” and the “best teacher in the universe”. And they should know. They make accelerated progress in her lessons, and love the engaging and motivating way she injects fun and enjoyment into everything she does.

One pupil, who previously displayed significant behaviour problems, has just passed the 11+ examination and is going to grammar school. When pupils were asked by what they would like to change in Beth's class they said, "we can't think of anything, it's perfect".

Beth personally gets to know every child in her class, and is in tune with their social and personal needs. Last year she helped one child, and his family, through a difficult time, after his sibling died. She visits children in hospital taking gifts and cards, and sends postcards to their homes congratulating them on their success.

Her reputation as an excellent teacher precedes her. Word has reached the Department for Children, Schools and Families about Beth’s outstanding teaching methods, and she has been used in a case study on effective practice in an area of high deprivation.

It is easy to see why. Beth is not only an outstanding teacher, but also an assessment coordinator and member of the leadership team who has been pivotal in improving performance at White’s Wood Lane Junior School. She doesn’t believe that deprivation should be a barrier to success, and has high expectations of every child in her care. She plans her lessons so that the needs of every child are covered.

Beth is always willing to participate in extra-curricular activities. She is responsible for singing at the school, and the Christmas production. She coaches the school football teams, and organises the annual educational field trip. Beth also puts on maths workshops for parents and manages a successful ‘Lunchtime Lounge’ area, where children can relax and enjoy indoor activities during their break.

Judges noted how quiet and unassuming she is but “start talking to her about the children and the lights go on”. Her headteacher, Sharon Close, said: “She is the consummate professional. I wish we could clone her!”
