Teaching Awards 2012 winner - UK Panel

Nathan Kemp
Tollgate Primary School

The Award for Teacher of the Year

Nathan Kemp is an exceptionally gifted young primary teacher, with a moral purpose to his work that has a major impact on children, parents and other teachers in east London. One Year 6 pupil says: 'He tells us to go for our dreams. He wants us to have a better future and not get in trouble on the streets'. His career began six years ago at Tollgate Primary School in Newham where 70 per cent of children speak English as a second language. It has become a dynamic and outstanding school which achieves far higher than national standards; year on year 70 per cent in Nathan's class gain level 5 in maths and English tests. In 2011 over 95% achieved level 4 or above. Nathan, aged 28, is now assistant headteacher with responsibility for Key Stage 2. Recently he's visited Tollgate's sister school in Bangladesh. Tom Canning OBE, Tollgate's head for eight years and winner of a regional Teaching Award in 2009 says: 'Nathan gives children courage, confidence and aspiration to reach the greatest heights.' His teaching is 'electric', his classroom 'a magical wonderland' where every child feels special and acquires a thirst for learning. They love their teacher and work hard for him. Other teachers benefit hugely from his coaching and he supports schools in challenging circumstances. Five headteachers in Newham say he's been 'the shining light' in a project for closing the attainment gap of vulnerable groups. Nathan continues to work with the Department for Education and the National College on similar strategies.

  • Advice needed

Hello congratulations on your award, it is clear that you worked hard and passionately to achieve this award and it wasn't even with the goal of winning such an award in mind which makes it so much better that an award of such prestige is simply the icing on the cake for you. My name is Sean Jones and i have wanted to be a teacher since i was 16 years old, i studied English Literature at the University of Surrey where i graduated with a BA. Since then i have tried to get onto teacher training courses both secondary and primary and have not gone further than the initial interview stages at best. and it's becoming more and more depressing as this is a vocational choice for me and i don't know what i can do to get my foot in the door. Any advice about the application process and/or teaching skills would be incredibly beneficial and hopefully help me to get into what i want to do.

  • Teaching Agency (DofE) press office looking for talented male primary school teachers - please get in touch if interested

Hi Nathan, My name's Hanna and I'm contacting you on behalf of the Teaching Agency, a division of the Department of Education. First of all, a huge congratulations for winning the teacher of the year award; you should be very proud of your achievement. I'm contacting you because we regularly run recruitment campaigns to attract more quality graduates into the teaching profession, and as part of these campaigns we recruit case studies - real life examples of teachers, such as yourself, who are excelling in the teaching profession and who are in a position to be able to give advice to those considering teaching as a career. As you have been named teacher of the year, you obviously fall into the 'high flyers' category of teachers, so I was wondering whether you might be interested in supporting our recruitment drives by becoming a 'teacher champion'. If this sounds like something that might be of interest, I'd be happy to provide you with more information and to discuss exactly how you might be able to help. My contact details are below. Best wishes, Hanna 0207 089 6124 07746500828 hanna.smith@munroforster.com

  • To Nathan Kemp

Dear Nathan, I would like to congratulate you with your dedicated hard work for children. To be a deputy head teacher must make you feel very proud. I believe that children do need more of a male influence. I am currently studying at stanmore college, currently training on CACHE award certificate and diploma in Childcare and education level 2 and i am hoping to do a level 3 next year. I want to do this because i feel that children need to be taught with males as well as women, everything should be balanced in life. you are a fantastic role model for guys to get stuck in childcare, because end of the day, children are our future and everyone that cares should contribute to help children to progress and learn to survive in the next generation. well done. you are fantastic and you deserve the reward. Parents that attend their children to your school must feel very proud for you to contribute to care and education for each and every child. well done. i am so proud for you. good luck to your future, best wishes, steven david charlton
