UK Winners scoop Gold Platos

UK winner Margaret Lund and Jeremy Irons

Ten inspirational individuals and one school were crowned UK Teaching Award winners, in a star studded event held at the London Palladium.

The hour long show, screened on BBC2 from 6pm, was presented by Jeremy Vine and Myleene Klass, and was part of education’s biggest annual celebration of excellence.

Winners were joined by friends, family, colleagues and celebrity guests including actors Jeremy Irons and Bill Paterson, Olympic rower and gold medallist Pete Reed, Paralympic swimmer and gold medallist David Roberts, historian Dan Snow, television presenters Adrian Chiles, Sophie Raworth and Zoe Salmon, Doctor Who script writer Russell T Davies, ‘Dancing on Ice’ star Suzanne Shaw, singer Liz McClarnon and Education Secretary Ed Balls.

The UK winners included drama teacher Natalie Richards, a former roadie for the rock-band Catatonia, enterprise teacher Thomas Minnock whose Year 10 are prize-winning share dealers and a sustainable school, Shawlands Academy, in the heart of Glasgow.

Gold plato winners were joined later at a gala dinner by 131 other finalists from around Britain who won silver platos earlier this year. The 2008 fellows’ weekend is hosted by founding chairman Lord Puttnam.
