Sustainable schools seminar

Teaching Award winners gathered in London recently for a one-off Sustainable Schools seminar to share good practice.
Hosted by the Guardian's 'Newsroom' - an exclusive exhibition and classroom space for school use - the audience heard three winning headteachers describe practical ways of involving children in green issues.
Barbara Tomlinson, headteacher of Wood Fold primary school in Wigan, 2006 healthy school of the year in the North West and winner of a Green Flag environment award for the past three years, described how Wood Fold is developing allotments to secure a fourth flag.
Other speakers included Maureen Perry, retired head of St Mary and St Benedict Primary in Coventry, 2006 healthy school of the year, and Bob Drew, head of Gearies Infant School, Redbridge, 2005 healthy school of the year in London. All three heads were generous in giving out classroom resources, hints and tips.
This was the second TA seminar for sharing expertise. The first was on modern foreign languages in primary schools. If you have any ideas or themes which you'd like us to develop as seminar subjects please e-mail poppyo@teachingawards.com
