First GTC award winners named

Cheryl Buckley, head of physical education at Baxter College, Kidderminster in Worcestershire said she was "absolutely thrilled" to be one of three Teaching Award winners given recognition by the General Teaching Council for England (GTC), with its new Award for Excellence in Professional Development in the West Midlands.

Elizabeth Maguire of Forefield Infant School, Liverpool,  winner of the BT Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary school, won the GTC Award in the North West. David Torn from St Edwards CE Comprehensive School in the London borough of Havering, won the 2007 Guardian Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary Scchool and  the GTC award in London.

Cheryl, who was also named Guardian Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School, is a subject mentor for teachers training in PE and dance at Baxter's College, a designated training school.

Presenting her trophy at the West Midlands ceremony Keith Bartley, chief executive of the GTC, said: "Teaching is a learning profession and we are delighted to reward those who show a real passion for learning, for developing themselves and their colleagues."
