Emma Thompson becomes the Teaching Awards' new President

Oscar-winning actress and writer Emma Thompson has agreed to become president of the Teaching Awards Trust

Ms Thompson said: ‘I am genuinely proud and honoured to take on this new role as president of the Teaching Awards. I owe so much of what I’ve done to my fantastic teachers at school and at university and it is exciting to join in celebrating what is probably the most important profession of them all

‘It is very difficult to imagine how any of us would develop into happy, confident, fulfilled citizens without good teachers. But for them, all the other professions would pretty much cease to exist.’

The awards, often called the “oscars for teachers” celebrate and recognise the unique contribution of teachers in society.Caroline Evans, chief executive of the Teaching Awards commented, ‘Emma’s support for the Awards will help the Trust celebrate those who dedicate their professional lives to securing a future for the next generation.’

A Teaching Awards survey of 100 award-winning teachers found that 95% of those taking part said the best thing about teaching as a career was the opportunity to inspire children and young people and to make a difference.Ms Evans continued, ’Our survey shows that teaching is a career chosen by people who are passionate about making their contribution to society by supporting and transforming young lives.’  As one teacher surveyed said ‘We all have dreams and I feel that teaching is all about helping to make them come true for young people.’

The awards were founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam who said, ‘of everything I’ve ever done, these awards are unquestionably the most likely to celebrate their centenary! They certainly retain a special place in my affection.’

Lord Puttnam retains the title of “founder” of the Teaching Awards. Taking the chairmanship is Will Wyatt CBE, formerly deputy director general of the BBC. He said: ‘I am thrilled to take the helm of the Teaching Awards Trust which honours great teaching and great teachers.’
