£2000 Sports Prize
'National 2006 Healthy School winner receiving plato from Darren Campbell’
It’s the season of school sports days and the Teaching Awards has created a £2000 incentive for making a nomination, backed by world class athletes and winning PE teachers.
Whether a school is saving for a new athletics track, some running spikes or even a new set of bean bags, now is a good time to nominate a teacher.
In the next few days all nominations for a teaching award will be entered into a free prize draw with the chance of winning £2,000 worth of sports equipment for their school. The summer sports voucher can be spent on any kind of kit – from athletics gear to bats, balls and rackets.
"A PE department can never have too much equipment!” says PE teacher Amanda Richmond from Stowupland High School, Stowmarket in Suffolk who runs a gifted and talented programme and teaches at least one Olympic hopeful – a Year 11 swimmer.
Amanda, who won the teaching award for school and community involvement in 2003 is passionate about outdoor pursuits and has more than 100 pupils taking Duke of Edinburgh Awards. “If I won I would put the money towards buying a new trampoline for the school club – they would be thrilled.”
Olympic gold medal winner Darren Campbell says: “Teachers are so important in society. I was always good at sport but my PE teacher gave me the belief that it was OK to express myself and win.”
Darren who presented the Healthy School of the Year Award in 2006 adds: “From the age of 12 I had my mind set on the Olympic Games. To win a gold medal (at Athens 2004, 4x100m relay) was a dream come true.”
Anyone can say ‘thank you’ to an inspirational headteacher, teacher, teaching assistant or governor by nominating them for a prestigious 2008 Teaching Award. Parents, colleagues, and pupils can make nominations online. All those who nominate before Monday 21 May will be entered into the draw.
Caroline Evans, Chief Executive of the Teaching Awards said: “Nominating someone for a Teaching Award is a great way of recognising and celebrating the fantastic work that takes place in schools across England.
The summer term is here, so now is the chance to get online and nominate. Everyone is in with a chance of winning £2000 worth of sports equipment, just in time for school sports day.”
