Children at an inner city school are redesigning their playground, thanks to their award-winning headteacher and two generous supporters.

Tracy Stone, head of Rookery Primary School received a £10,000 cheque on Tuesday 20 March to spend on new play facilities for their playground, as part of her prize for winning the national 2006 Teaching Award for headteacher in a primary school.

The cash comes jointly from Woolworths Kids First, the charity associated with the high street chain, and ESP, a leading playground equipment company. Tracy who has been a head for nine years said: “The children are so excited and will be very much involved in working with the designers at ESP in deciding what they want and how we can best use the space.  For me, the key to a successful playground is to ask the children what they want - they always have plenty of ideas!”

Woolworths Playground Partnerships manager, Jodi Saul said: “We are passionate about helping schools further develop their playgrounds and proud to support the Teaching Awards. By presenting the cheque to winning headteacher Tracy, we hope other schools will realise the opportunities they have in turning their playground dreams into reality.”

ESP managing director Andrew Wood said: “We are very pleased to be involved with the Teaching Awards and look forward to working with Tracy. I’m sure like many other schools we have worked with, including Malborough Infant & Junior School, Birmingham, the children at Rookery will benefit from having a new, creative play area. I look forward to seeing the results at Rookery soon.”
